[01] Denmark supports Cyprus' EU accession
Denmark warmly supports Cyprus' accession to the EU, said the Danish Prime
Minister Mr Anders Fogh Rasmussen, after a meeting in Athens with his Greek
counterpart Mr Costas Simitis on 4 April, adding that impressive progress
has been made on the matter.
Mr Rasmussen pointed out that a solution of the Cyprus problem is, of
course, desirable but not a precondition for accession of the island to the
EU and expressed warm support for the talks between President Clerides and
the Turkish-Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktash.
The Danish Prime Minister urged the two sides to search for a solution as
soon as possible and promised that if the Cyprus problem were not solved
before Denmark assumed the six-monthly rotating EU presidency, in July this
year, every possible attempt would be made towards that end.
[02] President Clerides receives British MPs
British Parliamentarians, members of the "Friends of Cyprus" committee of
the House of Lords and the House of Commons, are currently in Cyprus on a
four-day visit headed by the Chairman of the committee, Lord Corbett.
After a meeting with President Clerides, Lord Corbett stated, inter alia,
that for the past 25 years the "Friends of Cyprus" have encouraged contacts
between the two communities on Cyprus.
Lord Corbett welcomed the resumption of peace talks between President
Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktash. He also expressed the
committee's warm support for Cyprus' bid to join the EU and added that this
helps the climate of the talks.
[03] Presentation of Credentials
Mr Stavros A. Epaminondas, Ambassador of Cyprus to Austria, presented his
credentials on 3 April to His Royal Highness Prince Hans Adam II as Cyprus'
Ambassador to Liechtenstein.
After presenting his letters of credence, Mr Epaminondas held talks with
the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Ernst Walch, which focused on the
recent developments in the Cyprus problem, Cyprus' EU accession course and
the bilateral relations.
