[01] Algeria reaffirms its support for a Cyprus solution based on UN
resolutions
The Prime Minister of Algeria Mr Ali Benplis reiterated his country's
consistent support for a settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of
the United Nations resolutions and the principles of international law
during a meeting he had with Dr Vasos Lyssarides, who visited Algiers on 21
October, as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic Mr Glafcos
Clerides.
Mr Benplis also reaffirmed that Algeria would continue to support its
principled position on Cyprus more firmly within the Islamic Conference
Organisation.
Dr Lyssarides handed the Algerian Prime Minister a written message from
President Clerides, in relation to the resolutions on Cyprus adopted by the
Islamic Conference Organisation. He thanked Mr Benplis for Algeria's stance
on Cyprus and briefed him on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.
Moreover he underlined the immediate need for finding a solution to
regional problems, especially to the Cyprus and Middle East problems, with
a view to create conditions of stability and security and establish the
correct preconditions for combating terrorism.
During the meeting, both Dr Lyssarides and Mr Benplis stressed the need for
further enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various
international fora as well as strengthening bilateral relations in all
fields.
[02] Cyprus Government welcomes Northern Ireland peace process
Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou expressed, during his daily
press briefing yesterday, the Government's satisfaction with the move
towards the implementation of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in Northern
Ireland.
"Any move towards the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement is
welcomed. The Cyprus Government would be pleased if the stated intention to
hand over weapons and move ahead with the provisions of this agreement are
fully adhered to. It would contribute not only to the peace in Northern
Ireland but to the overall effort for peace in our planet".
