[01] Foreign Minister back from United Arabic Emirates

Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, returned on 14 October 2001, from his trip to the United Arab Emirates where he had official meetings. In a statement to the press upon his arrival at Larnaca airport, Mr Kasoulides referred to an official announcement transmitted by the official News Agency of The United Arab Emirates. According to this announcement the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Al Nayian received his Cypriot counterpart. During the meeting the two men examined the latest international developments and reiterated the need for international cooperation to combat terrorism as well as the need for finding a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to the Middle East problem and the Palestinian issue. They have also underlined the significance of the respect for international legality and the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with the UN resolutions, the announcement concluded.

Mr Kasoulides stated that Mr Al-Nayian accepted his invitation to visit the island the soonest possible.

[02] Cyprus granted an observer's status

During the 52nd Summit of the Executive Committee of the High Commission for Refugees, which was convened in Geneva from 1 to 5 October 2001, Cyprus' request for attending the meetings of the High Commission for the period October 2001-2002 was unanimously adopted and the island has been granted an observer's status.
