"The way to the EU for Turkish Cypriots goes through the solution to the Cyprus problem", EU Commissioner of Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, stated on 10 October 2001, inviting the Turkish Cypriots to cooperate for the solution of the problem which will in turn enable them to benefit from the island's accession to the EU.
