[01] Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, returned from Brussels on 10
October 2001, where he addressed the 20th meeting of the EU-Cyprus Joint
Parliamentary Committee
On his arrival at Larnaca airport the Foreign Minister made the following
statement:
"Following the meetings I had, I return with two main conclusions,
initially that the EU has recognised Cyprus' contribution in the combat
against terrorism and secondly that the EU does not take into consideration
the faulse allegations found in part of the international press with regard
to Cyprus/ involvement in money laundering".
Mr Kasoulides added that, according to EU Commissioner of Enlargement,
Cyprus' accession course would proceed regardless of the deadlock reached
in the talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem and that the relevant
decision would be taken towards the end of 2002 with the aim of the island
acceeding the Union by 1st January 2004. The Foreign Minister added that
according to Mr Verheugen Cyprus will join the EU with or without the
solution to the Cyprus problem on 1 Januray 2004.
[02] EU Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, calls on Turkish Cypriots to
cooperate for the solution to the Cyprus problem
"The way to the EU for Turkish Cypriots goes through the solution to the
Cyprus problem", EU Commissioner of Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, stated
on 10 October 2001, inviting the Turkish Cypriots to cooperate for the
solution of the problem which will in turn enable them to benefit from the
island's accession to the EU.
Mr Verheugen was speaking during the working of the 20th meeting of the EU-
Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee held in Brussels on 9-10 October. The
EU Commissioner noted that the majority of the Turkish Cypriots is in
favour of the island/s accession to the EU and that they must be aware of
the fact that the benefits, economic and political, accrued from accession
can only be gained through the solution of the Cyprus problem.
