[01] Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides asked to an extraordinary
session, on 19 September, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Ambassadors
of the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, the
European Union and Switzerland to whom he made a collective demarche
regarding press reports published in various countries about the alleged
involvement of Cyprus in the activities of Osama Bin Laden.
Mr Kasoulides underlined the political will of the Government to cooperate
with all countries for the combating of international terrorism and called
on all Ambassadors to convey to their Governments the official request of
the Republic of Cyprus, if they possess any sort of information or evidence
regarding the purported accusations made in the international press to send
it to the Government as soon as possible so that it may be thoroughly
investigated Cyprus in cooperation with the foreign authorities and so that
the above governments may be informed about the results of this investigation.
[02] All necessary measures adopted in airports and ports
The Minister of Communication and Works, Mr Averof Neophytou, on 19
September 2001, chaired a Ministerial Committee meeting with the participation
of the Minister of Finance, Mr Takis Clerides and the Minister of Commerce,
Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis to discuss the coordination of the
increased safety measures in the airports and ports of the island.
Following the conclusion of the meeting, Mr Neophytou made, inter alia, the
following statement: "We have reviewed the whole situation and to be honest
in view of the latest developments which have takenplace in the United
States, the government of the Republic of Cyprus has taken all necessary
steps for improving the security measures in airports and ports and for
effectively surveilling them".
