[01] Denktash's refusal main topic in Brussels
Cypriot Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, briefed on 9 September 2001,
his 15 European Union coutnerparts and the Foreign Ministers of the
candidate countries on the Turkish Cypriot leader/s refusal to accept the
invitation conveyed to him by the UN Secretary General for talks on Cyprus.
Mr Kasoulides attended a working lunch the 15 EU Foreign Ministers had with
their 13 counterparts from the candidate countries within the framework of
the EU General Affairs Council/s informal meeting.
Meanwhile, during the working lunch, the Belgian Presidency of the Council
informed the 13 Foreign Ministers of the context of the discussions held
between the 15 member states at their informal meeting in Genval and in
particular of the ideas concerning the preparation of the new Intergovernmental
Conference in 2004.
[02] Cyprus' accession to the EU is Greece's aim
"By moving closer to 2004 our national aim is Cyprus' accession to the EU,
the solution to the Cyprus problem", were the words emphasized, inter alia,
by Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, in the opening ceremony of the
International Fair in Thessaloniki.
During his speech the Greek Prime Minister noted the following: "At the
same time Greece/s strategical target is to consolidate her position as a
guarantor of stability and peace in the Balkans, to resist the plans of
changing borders, to insist to the respect of international law, to ensure
that our armed forces maintain continuously their deterrence ability".
