Varma.India will always support the independence, unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Cyprus and gives its full backing to President Clerides' commitment to find a settlement through dialogue, the new Indian High Commissioner stated as he presented his credentials. He described Cyprus as "a valuable and trusted friend" whose cooperation and support is much appreciated. Receiving the credentials, President Clerides said that India should assume the role and position it deserves in world affairs and noted the common historical bonds the two countries share. The President added that he expects the Turkish Cypriot side to return to the negotiating table and abandon its intrasigent positions to help find a settlement, based on UN resolutions and respect of international law. The new High Commissioner said that this month's official visit to Cyprus by Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee will reinforce the tradition of high level contacts between the two countries. [02] 25th International Congress of the International Union of Game BiologistsCyprus' southern town of Limassol is hosting from 4 September 2001 the 25th International Congress of the International Union of Game Biologists (IUGB) organised along with the 9th International Perdix symposium, which is to be opened on 6 September 2001, by the Cyprus Interior Ministry and the Game and Fauna service.The two conferences, which will be attended by some 300 delegates from 39 countries will be addressing the problem of wild life management in the 21st century and will be focusing on studies pertaining animals, wild birds, pheasants, partridges, quails and francolins. Addressing the IUGB Congress, the Cypriot Interior Minister, Mr Christodoulos Christodoulou, said that despite its small size Cyprus plays host to a great diversity of animals, though it faces, as other coutries do, the problem of the extinction of certain rare species. The Interior Minister noted that the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of part of Cyprus, the uprooting of 200,000 people and the implantation of thousands of illegal immigrants from Turkey to the occupied territory of the island, have resulted to a huge and irreversible damage of the environment and the ecosystem. Mr Christodoulou added that the island/s competent authorities are working systematically to maintain and upgrade the environment.
