[01] Cyprus condemns acts of violence in Palestinian Autonomous Areas
The Republic of Cyprus condemns recent acts of violence in the Palestinian
Autonomous Areas, particularly the demolition of houses that belong to
Palestinian people and the excessive use of armed force, which quite
frequently results in the death of innocent people. This was the case with
the Israeli attack of July 31 2001, as a result of which two young
Palestinian boys died.
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus urges both sides to show maximum
restraint, lest the situation gets out of control and escalates into
uncontrolled violence with unpredictable results.
It also firmly believes that diplomacy should regain the upper hand and
that differences which exist between the Israelis and the Palestinians
should be resolved on the negotiating table. Once again, our fervent hope
is that peace with justice, security, prosperity and stability prevail
among all the people of the Middle East.
[02] Cyprus and Syria adhere to the respect and implementation of UN
Resolutions
The President of Syria, Mr Bashar Al Assad has shown keen interest in the
Cyprus question and the Republic's efforts to join the European Union
during his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of
Cyprus, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides who handed him a personal message from the
President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafcos Clerides yesterday in
Damascus.
Mr Assad also expressed his country's adherence to the principles of
international law and order, respect for UN resolutions and the territorial
integrity of states, values he said Cyprus shares as well.
