[01] Cyprus will join the EU as a united, federal country

Deputy leader of the Fine Gael party of Ireland, Mr Jim Mitchell expressed hope that Cyprus will join the European Union as a united, federal country, pointing out that a political settlement is not a precondition for accession.

Speaking after a meeting with House President, Mr Demetris Christofias, on 25 July, Mr Mitchell who is on the island at the invitation of the Democratic Rally (DISI), stated that among the candidate countries, Cyprus is the most advanced and better equipped to adopt the rules and norms of the Union, noting that the advantages of Cyprus/ EU membership will become more evident after the island/s accession.

Mr Mitchell added that the public opinion in the northern occupied part of the island is already leaning towards Cyprus' membership to the EU and expressed the conviction that Cyprus will accede to the EU in the next few years.

[02] Hopes for a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem

Recent developments in the Cyprus peace effort and the accession of Cyprus and Slovakia to the European Union were among the issues discussed on 25 July between the House President, Mr Demetris Christofias and his Slovak counterpart, Mr Josef Migas, on the island for a private visit.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Christofias said that the two men had agreed to further develop relations between the two parliaments, while Mr Migas hadexpressed hope that the Cyprus problem will be soon solved peacefully and democratically, with the two communities living together.

Mr Christofias thanked Slovakia for its efforts in the rapprochement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island and for thedeployment of the United Nations Slovakian peace keepers. Slovakia has become the newest troop contributor with some 280 officers and troops.

[03] Commitment to the efforts made for the return of the occupied town of Famagusta to its people

Forty-four members of the House of Commons have signed an early day motion expressing the House's commitment to the efforts made for the return of the occupied town of Famagusta to its people.

The motion tabled on 3 July 2001, reads that the House of Commons "remembers with deep sorrow that another year has passed since the Turkish military invasion of the Republic of Cyprus in 1974 and that the beautiful and historic town of Famagusta remains a deserted town in the now occupied area of northern Cyprus and is inaccessible to its former citizens".

[04] Request to desist Turkey from its intransigent stand

Greek Cypriot organisations in Canada have appealed to the Canadian government and the international community to exert pressure on Turkey "to desist from its intransigent stand and anachronistic policies and to show the necessary political will regarding a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem".

The organisations' position was included in a resolution adopted by the citizens of Canada representatives of the constituent organisations of the Cypriot community of Toronto, the Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus of Canada, the Cypriot Community of Mississauga, the Cypriot Community of Kitchener'Waterloo, the Cyprus-Canada Chamber of Commerce, the Greek Cypriots Cultural Organisation and the Cyprus-Canadian Hunters and Trap Shooters Association, on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus territory in 1974.
