[01] Government reaction to Turkish National Security Council decisions

The Cyprus government considers yesterday's Turkish National Security Council decisions as proof of Turkey's intransigent stance on the Cyprus problem and unacceptable approach to the Cyprus problem, and is in direct contradiction of all the relevant resolutions issued by the UN and other international organisations.

Asked to comment on statements by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit about a "velvet divorce" in Cyprus, on the Czechoslovakia model, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said yesterday that it shows Turkey's true intentions.

"What is revealed is that in reality Turkey came to Cyprus as a conqueror aiming at annexing a part of its territory", he added.

Mr Papapetrou expressed the Cyprus government's strong reaction to this approach and added that the government would intensify its international activity in order to make Turkish intentions regarding Cyprus clear.

These decisions will give us one more reason for intensifying a multilateral international activity in all directions to dissolve even the slightest illusions one might have regarding Turkey's real intentions in Cyprus.»

[02] Tanzania expresses support for Cyprus

The President of Tanzania, Mr Benjamin W. Mkapa, has said his country fully supports a solution of the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions and international law, one that would ensure that Cyprus would remain united and free.

He gave these assurances at a ceremony accepting the credentials of Mr Michael Stavrinos, who has been appointed Cyprus' High Commissioner to Tanzania. Mr Stavrinos, who is also High Commission to Kenya will be based in Nairobi.
