Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-05-25Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 25 May 2001CONTENTS[01] Foreign Minister on developments in occupied areaCyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said that the collapse of the illegal government in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus will only reinforce the Turkish side's intransigence in efforts for a settlement of the Cyprus problem. He also expressed regret and concern over a bomb attack yesterday against a Turkish Cypriot opposition daily newspaper, "Avrupa". [02] Greek parliament calls for sanctions if Turkey doesn't comply with Human Rights Court rulingThe Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Greek parliament has called on the Council of Europe to ask the Turkish government to conform fully with the ruling and to make it clear to Turkey that if it does not do so it will have to face sanctions. In a resolution adopted unanimously on Wednesday, the Committee welcomed the recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights which found Turkey guilty of human rights violations in Cyprus, saying it constitutes an official recognition of Turkey's responsibility internationally for the violation of human rights in the part of Cyprus under its occupation. Moreover, Greece's Deputy Foreign Minister Ms Elizabeth Papazoe, asked in the Greek Parliament whether Greece intends to bring up the issue of Turkey's non-compliance with the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights at the next meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers, said that Greeece would like the issue to be included in the common position adopted by the EU member-states so that this would be one of the parametres that would be taken into consideration when Turkey's relationship with the EU is evaluated. She said that the ruling was important firstly because it puts the responsibility for human rights violations squarely on Turkey, which has always tried to shift the responsibility onto the illegal regime in the occupied area, and secondly because it stressed that there is only one legal government on the island, that of the Republic of Cyprus.
