[01] President Clerides comments on European Court ruling

President Glafcos Clerides described the judgement by the European Court of Human Rights finding Turkey guilty of human rights violations in the areas of the Cyprus it has occupied since 1974 when its troops invaded the island, as "a great victory for the Republic of Cyprus".

"The European Court of Human Rights makes it clear that it recognises the Government of the Republic of Cyprus as the only legal government in Cyprus", he stressed.

President said the Court ruling "offers Cyprus a powerful weapon" in the UN- led peace talks which must be carefully studied and made the best possible use of in the struggle the island is waging.

[02] Greek Foreign Minister on European Court ruling against Turkey

Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has called on Turkey to seize the opportunity and contribute towards a new era of peace and cooperation in the south east Mediterranean.

In a written statement on the European Court judgement which found Turkey guilty of human rights violations in Cyprus, the Greek Foreign Minister said on Saturday that the Court decision was an important development for the Republic of Cyprus because it brings to the foreground the fact that the Cyprus question is a political and moral issue not exclusive to Hellenism but one that relates to the entire international community and especially to European institutions.

[03] Greens also support enlargement

Cyprus must make sure it maintains its characteristics, especially when it joins the European Union whose slogan is "unity and variety", the Secretary General of the European Federation of Green Parties, Mr Arnold Cassola said after a meeting with President Clerides on Saturday.

He added that the Green Parties are not only concerned with environmental issues but also with EU enlargement, which they support and which encompasses Cyprus.

He said that a proposal the Greens had recently made that the EU candidate countries send a parliamentary representative to the European Parliament as observers as from next year in preparation for 2004, the possible date of entry, had been accepted.

Mr Cassola was also accompanied by Ms Jannina Andersen, Leader of the Green Group in the Finnish Parliament, who said that Cyprus must make sure that it maintains its environment because the EU sets great store on environmental protection. She added that ways must be found to keep the island as beautiful as it is today in 200 years time and for future generations.

[04] Cyprus treats its mothers and daughters well

Cyprus is in 12th position worldwide as regards the way the society treats its mothers and daughters.

This was published in an annual report covering 94 countries on the State of the World's Mothers 2001 issued by the organisation "Save the Children".
