Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-05-07Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 7 May 2001CONTENTS[01] President Clerides "fully satisfied" with Athens talksPresident Glafcos Clerides said he was "fully satisfied" with his talks in Athens last week during a three-day official visit there.Speaking on his return from the Greek capital on Friday, he said that although no decisions had been taken many issues were raised and discussed concerning possible eventualities with respect to the island's accession course to the European Union and efforts to settle the Cyprus question. He said he expected that as Cyprus gets closer to EU membership, Turkey would be likely to request postponement of the island's accession course and express readiness for real negotiation. He added, however, that he did not think the Turkish side would change its tune as far as the resumption of the UN-led peace talks are concerned at this stage. While in Athens President Clerides also met with the Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos, who said he was optimistic that the steady and firm policy adopted by Athens and Nicosia over the years would help achieve Cyprus' accession to the European Union. [02] US supports Cyprus' application for EU membershipThe United States has reiterated its support for the EU's position on Cyprus' accession to the European Union."We've supported the Helsinki conclusions, which laid out the EU's progress. And we've also supported very much the UN efforts, and that is where our focus remains right now", State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher said on Friday (4.5.01). Asked to comment on reports in the Cypriot press that the United States has misgivings at the prospect of a divided Cyprus' entry in the European Union and may seek a freeze in the process, Mr Boucher said: "Our position has not changed. We support the 1999 Helsinki conclusions".
