[01] Ireland reaffirms its support for the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problemThe Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Michalis Attalides, who is in Ireland on a two day visit, held talks yesterday with the Secretary General of the Irish Ministry for Foreign Affairs Mr Padraic MacKernan and other officials. The talks focused on Cyprus' EU accession course, the Cyprus problem, Ireland's role as a Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, the Northern Ireland problem and bilateral relations.During the discussions, Mr Attalides briefed his Irish counterpart on the progress made by Cyprus in the framework of its European Union accession course and on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem. Furthermore he asked for the support of Ireland, as a newly - elected member of the UN Security Council, in the efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem according to dictates of international law and the UN resolutions on Cyprus. The Secretary General of the Irish Foreign Ministry reaffirmed his country's support for the UN Secretary General's efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed concern over the continuation of the current deadlock. He also welcomed Cyprus' progress in the EU accession negotiations and underlined his country's support for Cyprus' EU membership. [02] Bilirakis and Maloney urge President Bush to aid Cyprus reunification effortsUS Republican Congressman Mike Bilirakis and Democrat Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney have urged the Bush Administration to help reunify the Republic of Cyprus, in order "to stabilise the Eastern Mediterranean at a time of growing tensions in the Middle East".Mr Bilirakis and Mrs Maloney were joined by 60 members of the Congress in signing a letter to US President George W. Bush, requesting the "immediate appointment of a Presidential Emissary to add momentum to the reunification effort". In their letter, the Congresspersons underline that "Cyprus' upcoming accession to the European Union introduces new political and economic factors that could help achieve a settlement of this 27-year-old debate and demand greater US involvement". They stress that "as the world's only remaining superpower, America is in a unique position to help move this process forward" adding that "to advance this goal, we would urge that your administration continues US support for the UN framework for negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities". [03] Zackheos reiterates Cyprus' strong and unwavering support for peace in the Middle East"There is an absolute need to fully address the emergency situation in the occupied territories, with a view to alleviating the worsening situation of the Palestinian people. The economy in the territories is on the verge of collapse and the budgetary situation of the Palestinian Authority is undeniably grim. Cyprus is deeply concerned at this situation, which has continued for two long", the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations Mr Sotos Zackheos stated on 1 March.Addressing a meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, Mr Zackheos reiterated Cyprus' strong and unwavering support in the pursuit of peace in the region. "All interested parties and the international community at large should consider with utmost seriousness the tragic reality of everyday conflict with the simply unacceptable loss of life and property, the perpetuation of the economic misery and the violations of human rights affecting daily the lives of millions of innocent people. The tragic consequences of the continuation of the present state of affairs are I believe very clear to all ", he said. "There is no certainty that the conflict if not contained and eventually terminated, will not have a spill-over effect and engulf the wider region with unimaginable consequences, "Mr Zackheos said, adding that for this reason "the case for reconciliation must be at the top of our agenda". Efforts must be intensified towards the achievement of a just and viable settlement based on UN resolutions, which will lead to regional peace, stability, security, and cooperation, he said. "Cyprus believes that the forces of moderation should redouble their efforts, isolate the extremists and work diligently to reinforce the hope and keep the vision of the many millions of inhabitants of our region for a new Middle East", he said in conclusion. [04] Cyprus and Qatar sign agreement to establish diplomatic relationsCyprus and Qatar have signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations at an ambassadorial level.The document was signed by the island's Permanent Representative to the UN Mr Sotos Zakhaeos for the Republic of Cyprus and by Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser on behalf of Qatar.
