[01] Tourist arrivals expected to increase in 2001
Tourist arrivals in Cyprus this year are expected to increase by a five to
ten percent, while revenue from the tourism sector is expected to reach 1.3
billion Cyprus pounds*, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr
Nicos Rolandis said yesterday.
Addressing the annual meeting of the Tourist Business Association, Mr
Rolandis said that in the last years, tourism has shown good results and
has supported Cyprus' economy. "In the year 2000, 2.7 million tourists
visited the island compared to 2.43 million the previous year, an increase
of 10.5 percent, while revenue in the same year reached 1.18 billion pounds
as opposed to 1.02 billion pounds in 1999, an increase of 15.5 percent", he
said.
Mr Rolandis pointed out that in the year 2000 compared to 1997, tourist
arrivals and revenue show an overall increase of 29 percent in arrivals and
38 percent in revenue.
