Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-12-11Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 11 December 2000CONTENTS[01] Reference to Cyprus in European Council ConclusionsThe European Council, which met in Nice on 7,8 and 9 December, approved in its conclusions adopted on 9 December a reference to Cyprus.In the chapter entitled "External Relations", the European Council welcomes and "strongly supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General to achieve an overall agreement on the Cyprus problem consistent with the UN Security Council Resolutions and to arrive at a positive conclusion of the process initiated in December 1999". The Council also "appeals to all the parties concerned to contribute to the efforts made to this effect". Greek Prime Minister Mr Costas Simitis said the European Union in its summit conclusions, has stated in the most formal manner that the Cyprus problem is a problem that concerns it and that everybody should try to solve it. [02] Presentation of credentialsCyprus Ambassador to Cairo Mr Dimitris Drousiotis presented his credentials on 5 December to the President of Sudan Mr Omar Hasan El Bashir, as the country's new Ambassador to Khartoum.Receiving the credentials, President Bashir expressed his country's full support for the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem in the framework of the United Nations resolutions. He also underlined the need to respect and implement all relevant UN resolutions on Cyprus. Sudan supports a just solution to the Cyprus problem, which would ensure the unity and territorial integrity of Cyprus and respect for the human rights of all Cypriots, he said. [03] Cyprus and Gambia establish diplomatic relationsThe Permanent Representatives of Cyprus and Gambia to the United Nations Ambassadors Sotos Zackheos and Baboucarr - Blaise Ismaila Jagne, signed on 8 December at the Cyprus Permanent Mission in New York, a diplomatic relations protocol on behalf of their countries.In his speech, Ambassador Zackheos thanked his counterpart for Gambia's stance in the Security Council of which it had been a member last year. He also expressed the need for the development of bilateral relations. For his part, the Gambian Ambassador expressed the hope that his country will benefit from Cyprus' experience in the fields of tourism, trade, business administration and merchant shipping.
