During the meeting, the two sides examined economic, trade and other relations between Cyprus and India and expressed the wish and determination for further development of relations between their two countries in all fields.

[03] France supports the continuation of the talks

France expressed satisfaction with the continuation of the Cyprus settlement talks, which started in the framework of the United Nations and under the auspices of the UN Secretary General, to whom it gives its unreserved support, the French Foreign Minister Mr Hubert Vedrine stated in a written answer to a question on Cyprus.

Replying to a written question by Georges Sarre, member of the French National Assembly, on the prospects of a solution to the Cyprus problem in relation to Cyprus' EU accession course, the French Foreign Minister said that France encourages the participants to continue their efforts aimed at reaching a settlement, which would be in line with the UN Security Council resolutions.

The statement refers to the European Council decision taken at Helsinki in December 1999, which states that a political settlement would facilitate Cyprus' accession to the European Union without this being a precondition, however.
