[01] Talks are the only way to find a settlement
Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou yesterday expressed the hope that
the Turkish Cypriot side will take part in the sixth round of UN-led
proximity talks for a settlement on the island scheduled to resume in
Geneva end of January.
He added that the only way to find a settlement in Cyprus is through a
dialogue under UN auspices and said the Greek Cypriot side will be in
Geneva provided that nothing comes up until then that will force President
Glafcos Clerides reassess his position.
[02] One more EU chapter closed
Yet another chapter in Cyprus' negotiations for accession with the European
Union has been closed and one more is expected to be closed before the end
of the year.
The latest chapter, on the free movement of goods, was provisionally closed
in talks at negotiator level held in Brussels late last week. It brings the
total of chapters closed to 17 out of the 29, confirming that Cyprus leads
the 12 countries negotiating accession.
