[01] Cyprus and Sao Tome and Principe establish diplomatic relations
The Cyprus Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sotos
Zackheos, and the Charge d' Affaires of Sao Tome and Principe, Mr Dominos
Augusto Ferreira, signed at the Cyprus Mission in New York on 8 November, a
protocol establishing diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Sao Tome and
Principe. The two representatives expressed their wish to strengthen
friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Zackheos referred to common challenges and
problems faced by their small island states, especially with regard to
environment and security. He also referred to the UN meeting for small
island states to be hosted in Cyprus in January 2001, in which he hoped Sao
Tome and Principe would participate.
On his part, Mr Ferreira said that his country always supports the Cyprus
problem in the United Nations and other international fora.
[02] Cyprus supports Yugoslavia's participation in European institutions
The Cyprus Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Ambassador Michalis Attalides, expressed the Cyprus Government's support
for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia's application for membership to the
Council of Europe and for its participation in European institutions.
Speaking at the 107th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council
of Europe in Strasbourg on 9 November 2000, Mr Attalides welcomed the
presence of the new President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Mr
President Vojislav Kostunica, to the Council of Europe. He expressed the
hope that a new period will begin in Yugoslavia's relations with Europe
that will contribute towards the development and progress of the people of
the country.
Mr Attalides also welcomed the Committee of Ministers' decision to invite
simultaneously Armenia and Azerbaijan to join the Organisation, and
expressed the view that such a development would contribute to efforts to
settle problems that exist in the relations between the two countries.
