[01] President says time is working against both sides in Cyprus

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides left the island yesterday for Geneva, where he will take part in the fifth round of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, aimed at preparing the ground for substantive negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement.

Speaking on his departure, President Clerides said that the UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, would be presenting various documents which would take into account the reactions so far and added that this was an ongoing situation.

Replying to a question the President said time was working against both sides and that the de facto situation on the island benefited neither the Greek nor the Turkish Cypriots.

To another question he said that the question of a "Camp David" on Cyprus does not arise for the moment because the two sides are still too far apart.
