[01] Cyprus and Mexico sign memorandum

Cyprus Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting yesterday with Mexico's Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs for North America and Europe, Mr Juan Rebolledo Gout, who arrived on the island for a three-day official visit.

After their meeting, the two Ministers signed a memorandum of understanding, between the two ministries for the establishment of mechanisms for consultations on matters of common interest.

Speaking to the press after signing the agreement, the Mexican Foreign Minister said that a new era is dawning in the relationship between Mexico and Cyprus. Cyprus' aim to accede to the European Union and Mexico's current European Union relations, provide new possibilities for trade and other economic activities between the two countries. The agreement also offers the opportunity for further enhancing cooperation in fields of mutual interest such as law enforcement, migration, tourism and culture.

Referring to the Cyprus problem Mr Gout said his country supports the United Nations and Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and expressed the hope that the dialogue and the opportunities created through this dialogue, will lead to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

On his part, Mr Kasoulides said that the Mr Gout's presence in Cyprus demonstrates the close relations between the people of Cyprus and Mexico, and their traditional friendship; a friendship, which emanates from their dedication to principles and the position of principle Mexico has taken on Cyprus in all international fora, since Cyprus' independence.

Mr Kasoulides said that with his counterpart they have found new ways of enhancing bilateral relations and have taken new decisions on how to further develop cooperation in trade and tourism, and in combating international organised crime.
