[01] Hearing of the fourth inter-state case of Cyprus vs Turkey

The legal proceedings of the fourth inter-state application of the Republic of Cyprus against Turkey were concluded yesterday at the European Court of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

The hearing proceeded according to schedule despite Turkey's absence. The President of the Court considered there was no reason to adjourn the hearing since Turkey did not give the Court reasons for its absence.

A team of legal experts headed by the Attorney General of the Republic, Mr Alecos Markides, put forward Cyprus' positions on all the chapters of the case and asked the Court to condemn Turkey for gross violations of human rights which relate to the issue of missing persons in Cyprus, the rights to property of displaced Greek Cypriots, the living conditions of enclaved Greek Cypriots and the rights of Turkish Cypriots in the Turkish - occupied part Cyprus.

The Court heard arguments on all chapters and reserved its judgment for a later date.

In its report on the case last year, the European Commission for Human Rights, having heard the arguments of both sides, said that Turkey was responsible for gross violations of human rights on all of the above issues.

[02] Presentation of credentials

Cyprus's Ambassador Mr Andreas Skarparis presented his credentials on 19 September to Queen Margrethe II, as the Republic's new Ambassador to Denmark.
