[01] UN Secretary General to press for a substantive dialogue
The President of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides had a meeting in New York
yesterday with the United Nations Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan.
In a statement to the press after the meeting, President Clerides said that
with the Secretary General they exchanged views on the issue of the Cyprus
talks, the case of missing persons in Cyprus and the issue of Strovilia,
where Turkish occupation forces illegally moved their positions forward
from the cease-fire line.
Speaking at a press conference for the UN Millennium Summit earlier in the
day, UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, said that he intended to press
hard for substantive negotiations on the core issues.
"I think we have gone beyond the stage where we get together to have talks
about talks and I think we now really have to push the substance", he
added.
[02] Presentation of Credentials
The Ambassador of Cyprus to Mexico Mr A. Toumazis, who is also accredited
to Nicaragua, presented his credentials last Monday to the President of
Nicaragua Mr Arnoldo Aleman Lacayo, as Cyprus' new ambassador to that
country.
Speaking after the ceremony, the President of Nicaragua reiterated his
country's support for the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus.
He also accepted an invitation for an official visit to Cyprus.
