[01] US Democratic Presidential Candidate reaffirms commitment to achieving a comprehensive Cyprus settlement

US Democratic Presidential Candidate Mr. Al Gore has said he would continue to work for a just and lasting solution in Cyprus and expressed support for the UN-led efforts towards a comprehensive settlement, stressing that he remains deeply engaged in this process.

Mr Gore also said he would redouble his efforts for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus and other disputes in accordance with international law.

Replying to a questionnaire by the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) on Greco-Turkish relations and Cyprus, Gore notes the administration is working hard "to build on the hopeful developments between Greece and Turkey to make progress in the Aegean and on Cyprus."

"I am fully committed to this process and to reaching a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus dispute which permits all Cypriots to live in security," he said.

Expressing support for the current talks under UN auspices, he said he remains "deeply engaged" and adds "as President, I will work to redouble our efforts to find a peaceful resolution to these and other territorial disputes in accordance with international law."
