[01] UN Security Council renews UNFICYP mandate

UN Security Council adopted yesterday the Resolution 1303 (2000) by virtue of which the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is extended until December 15.

President of the Security Council, French Ambassador Mr. Jean-David Levitte said yesterday that all the members of the Council wish wholeheartedly every success to the forthcoming proximity talks, due to start on 5 July in Geneva.

The resolution 1303 reaffirms all relevant Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and in particular resolution 1251 (1999) which called upon all states to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, and requested them, along with the parties concerned, to refrain from any action which might prejudice that sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as from any attempt at partition of the island or its unification with any other country.

[02] Cyprus Ambassador to France awards medal to former Minister

Cyprus Ambassador to France Mr. Andreas Mavroyiannis awarded yesterday former French Minister and Mayor of Combs-La-Ville, Deputy Mr. Alain Vivien with the medal of the Grand Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Mavroyiannis praised Mr. Vivien for his firm support to Cyprus and his significant contribution in promoting bilateral relations as well as for his tireless efforts for making the Cyprus problem known throughout the world.

In his speech Mr. Mavroyiannis made special reference to Mr. Vivien's role in establishing the Cyprus - France Parliamentary Group in the French National Assembly, which played a decisive role in heightening the awareness of the French public opinion on Cyprus.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Mr. Vivien said that the negative and intransigent stand of the Turkish side does not allow the two sides in Cyprus to enter into a dialogue. Mr. Vivien stressed that "this is unacceptable in Europe today".

Moreover Mr. Vivien pledged to continue his efforts towards a Cyprus settlement.

[03] Accreditation of new Cyprus Ambassador to Georgia

Cyprus Ambassador Mr. Charalambos Ioannides presented yesterday his credentials to the President of Georgia Mr. Edvard Shevardnadze as the Republic's new Ambassador to Georgia.

Receiving Mr. Ioannides/ credentials, Mr. Shevardnadze expressed the hope that a just solution to the Cyprus problem will soon be reached in conformity with principles of International Law, in particular the respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, unity and independence.
