[01] Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia installs telemedicine system

The first telemedicine system in Cyprus was presented yesterday in Nicosia during a press conference in the presence of the renowned Egyptian heart surgeon, Magdi Yacub.

The telemedicine system, which was installed by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority at Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia, was donated to the Ministry of Health by Aspis Pronia Insurance Company, in a bid to upgrade medical services on the island.

During the press conference there was a live link up with London's Royal Brompton Hospital, Agia Sofia Hospital of Athens, Makarios Hospital in Nicosia and Papanicolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki (Greece).

In a speech, Health Minister Frixos Savvides pointed out that "for Cyprus, which does not have a medical school, telemedicine is of great significance and an important factor in efforts to improve health services".

He expressed certainty that "with the help of telemedicine, many incidents will be diagnosed and treated in Cyprus".

The conference was also attended by Greek Health Minister Alecos Papadopoulos, who said that telemedicine has saved many lives in isolated areas of the country.

For this reason, more health centres and regional medical centres in islands of the Aegean are connected with telemedicine systems, Papadopoulos added.
