Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-06-07Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Wednesday, 7 June 2000CONTENTS[01] Cypriot women are very active in promoting a culture of peace on the islandIn a statement addressed yesterday at the Twenty - Third session of the UN General Assembly on «Women 2000 Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty First Century» held in New York, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order Dr Lazaros Savvides, who is heading the Cypriot delegation attending the session, made a special reference to the role of women in Cyprus in promoting peace.Mr Savvides noted that «the women of Cyprus, experiencing for the last 26 years the tragic consequences of occupation and displacement have been particularly sensitive on matters of human rights and peace. The women's movement has been very active all these years in protesting against the illegal occupation through mass peaceful marches and in creating a culture of peace on the island through various activities including the promotion of bi-communal contacts aiming at exploring ways for peaceful conflict resolution», he said. He added that «as a result of the growing consciousness and mobilization on peace issues, the International Eco-Peace Village has been recently established, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, which supports the whole project. Through specialized training and exchange programmes, the Eco-Peace Village will play a significant role in the promotion of participation of women in the peace - building process and the creation of a culture of peace on the island and hopefully, in the region». [02] Foreign diplomats present credentialsThe President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday at a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace the credentials of the new Ambassadors of Japan and Poland Messrs S. Motoi Ohkubo and Tomasz Lis.Presenting his credentials, Ambassador Mr Okhubo said «Japan will continue to support the efforts of the UN Secretary General and others to bring about a peaceful solution to the Cyprus question», pointing out that since 1964 his country is the second largest financial contributor to the maintenance of the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus. Poland's new Ambassador to Cyprus Mr Lis said «As a warm supporter of peace and security in the region and in the world, Poland always used to advocate implementation of all the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions of the question of Cyprus. We opt and support the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General, the European Union and international society for a settlement based on the Republic of Cyprus / sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity».
