[01] Cyprus seeks to see human rights and democratic principles respected on a universal level

Minister of Interior Mr. Christodoulos Christodoulou stressed yesterday that the respect of human rights and the rule of law that are universally considered as factors of security and stability cannot be limited within one country's frontiers.

In a world of interdependence, he pointed out, no country can remain indifferent to the problems faced by its neighbours.

Addressing yesterday a two day meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Limassol, Mr. Christodoulou stressed that Cyprus became a member of the Council of Europe since its independence and has ratified all International Conventions on Human Rights and their relevant protocols, it adheres to democratic principles and applies them consistently. However, he pointed out reality does not always meet the spirit of those declarations.

In a Europe free of dividing walls, he said, Cyprus and the sufferings of its people should not remain the only sad exception. Cyprus staunchly seeks to see human rights and democratic principles promoted and respected on a universal level, he added.

Mr. Christodoulou called on the Council of Europe to consolidate its achievements in the spirit that led to its establishment. Moreover, he added, more political will is needed today in order to see prevail universal principles and the rule of law.
