[01] Foreign Minister holds talks in Italy
Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides left yesterday for Rome, where
he will meet with his Italian counterpart Lamberto Dini. He will also meet
with the President of the Italian Parliament Luciano Violante and other
officials.
During his three-day visit, Mr. Kasoulides will address the parliamentary
standing committee on foreign affairs on Cyprus/ course of accession to the
European Union and efforts for a settlement to the protracted Cyprus
problem.
The Cypriot Foreign Minister will also have a working lunch with members of
the Italian media.
[02] Cyprus Chief Negotiator for EU accession to undergo medical surgery in
London
Government Spokesman Mr. Michalis Papapetrou stated today that the former
President of the Republic of Cyprus, Head of the Negotiating Team for
Cyprus ' Accession to the European Union and President of the United
Democrats, Mr George Vassiliou, is flying to London today to undergo
surgery for the removal of a benign tumor (meningioma) of the cerebellum.
The tumor was diagnosed during medical examinations yesterday. Mr Vassiliou
expressed the wish to undergo surgery in Cyprus but his personal physicians
advised him against this.
The operation will be carried out at a specialised neurosurgical centre in
London selected by his personal physicians. Mr Vassiliou leaves this
afternoon for London. He will be admitted into hospital this evening and
undergo surgery tomorrow.
