[01] Foreign Minister meets with former Governor of MassachusettsDevelopments in the Cyprus problem and the region were discussed here today at a meeting between Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and former Governor of Massachusetts, of the United States Michael Dukakis.Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Kasoulides said that they examined broader issued concerning the region and ways of assisting efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. Mr. Kasoulides praised Mr. Dukakis/ personal and strong interest in the Cyprus issue and noted his ongoing efforts towards reaching a settlement. Mr. Dukakis said he is «cautiously optimistic», adding however that «this is the best opportunity we have had in a long long time to make some progress.» He expressed hope that the USA will be «extremely helpful on that» regarding decisions on Cyprus and Turkey. Replying to questions, Dukakis said President Clinton «has a very strong and personal interest in trying to bring this matter to a satisfactory settlement».
