Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-04-10Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 10 April 2000CONTENTS[01] Non-Aligned Movement reaffirms previous positions on CyprusThe Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Andreas Pirishis, represented Cyprus at the 13th Ministerial Conference of the Non Aligned Movement, held in Cartagena, Colombia between the 7th and 9th April 2000.In its final Declaration the Non Aligned Movement unanimously adopted a paragraph on the situation in Cyprus, which reaffirms previous positions and declarations of the Movement on the Cyprus problem. "The Movement considers the present status quo in Cyprus, established through the use of force and sustained by military strength, as unacceptable and is deeply concerned over the lack of progress in the search of a just and viable solution to this long lasting question, primarily due to Turkish intransigence," the Declaration says. The Movement calls for the intensification of efforts to find a solution based on the implementation of all UN resolutions and Non Aligned Movement decisions on Cyprus, in accordance with the principles and positions of the UN Charter and the rule of international law. Moreover it "considers any attempt for a change of the basis of the inter-communal dialogue held under the mandate of the Secretary General, as unacceptable". Finally, the Movement "welcomes the two recent rounds of proximity talks held under UN auspices" and "urges both sides to participate in the next round of talks to be held in May, in a positive and constructive spirit, in order to pave the way for a solution to this long-overdue problem". In his address to the Conference, the Director General of the Foreign Ministry expressed the Government's gratitude for the solidarity and support of the Movement, in Cyprus' long struggle to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence and to find a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem. Mr Pirishis pointed out that the Cyprus Government is ready to negotiate in good faith in the third round of proximity talks. "We hope that the other side will heed the call of the international community, as expressed in numerous resolutions of the UN Security Council, and take the same approach" , he added. [02] Cyprus signs contract with Greek University for the protection of Cyprus coastsThe Director of the Public Works Department Mr Costas Lambrou and Professor Constantinos Moutzouris of the Greek National Metsovion Polytechnic signed a contract for the preparation of a study aimed at protecting and improving the coastal zones of Tylliria, Chrysochou Bay, Zygi and Kition. The contract was signed last Friday in the presence of the Minister of Communications and Works Mr Averof Neophytou and the Ambassador of Greece Mr Kyriakos Rodousakis.Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Neophytou expressed satisfaction for the signing of the contract and stressed the importance of further cooperation with Greece. "Cyprus will benefit from such contacts, which will enrich our technical know-how and improve the quality of our beaches", he said. The study aims at defining appropriate methods or measures for the protection and improvement of the coastal zone in the framework and principles of sustainable development. It will also include an environmental impact assessment. The study will last two years and cost 444,000 Cyprus pounds.
