[01] US Presidential Emissary hopes UN process on Cyprus will be accelerated
US Presidential Emissary on Cyprus Alfred Moses expressed yesterday the
hope that the current UN - led process aiming at a comprehensive settlement
of the Cyprus problem will be accelerated. Speaking to the press yesterday
after a working breakfast with President Clerides, Mr Moses was asked
whether both sides share the view that there should be an acceleration of
the UN process in the next round of proximity talks. He replied "we
certainly hope so, this is our position. I said it when I was in Cyprus."
Cyprus Ambassador to the US Erato Markoulli, the Republic's Permanent
Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zakheos, US State Department's
Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston and US Ambassador to the
island Donald Bandler were also present at the working breakfast.
Later in the day President Clerides had a working lunch with UN Special
Adviser on Cyprus Mr. Alvaro de Soto with whom he exchanged views about how
things are developing.
[02] Verheugen reiterates EU stance on Cyprus
European Union Commissioner responsible for Enlargement Mr Gunter Verheugen
reiterated on April 4 that a "political settlement will facilitate Cyprus'
accession to the Union, but if no settlement is reached by completion of
the accession negotiations, the decision of the EU on accession will be
made without a political settlement being a pre-condition."
Mr. Verheugen was speaking at an event organised in Washington by the
European Institute and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation on EU enlargement.
Referring to Cyprus he said that "the positive developments in Greek-
Turkish relations, Turkey's candidate status and the resumption of
proximity talks aiming at a comprehensive settlement for Cyprus all
contributed to an improved political climate and the chance for a new
dynamism".
