[01] President Clerides leaves for Israel
The President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides left yesterday for
Israel on a three-day state visit, the first visit ever paid to Israel by a
Cypriot President, aimed at promoting the island's role in the area, by
creating better relations with neighbouring nations to help consolidate
regional peace and stability.
Speaking at Larnaca airport, before his departure, President Clerides said
"this is the first visit by a President of the Republic of Cyprus since its
establishment", adding that it "takes place in return for the visit to
Cyprus by the Israeli President" in November 1998.
Moreover he said that during his stay "we will exchange views on various
issues of interest to both sides."
Replying to questions, President Clerides said that his visit aims at
creating friendly relations with neighbouring countries. The strengthening
of friendly relations with neighbouring countries, he said, can help us
play a role in consolidating peace and stability in the broader region.
During his stay, the President of the Republic will meet with Israeli
President Mr. Ezer Weizman, Israeli Prime Minister Mr. Ehud Barak and the
President of the Knesset Mr. Abraham Burg.
He will also meet with the Patriarch of Jerusalem Diodoros and the Chairman
of the Palestinian Authority Mr. Yasser Arafat.
