[01] President Clerides meets with French President

The President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides met yesterday with French President Mr. Jacques Chirac.

An official statement issued after the meeting said that the talks which focused on Cyprus' EU course, the Cyprus problem and bilateral issues, «allowed for an even greater understanding between the two countries».

According to the same sources, President Chirac reaffirmed his country's support to UN efforts towards a solution to the Cyprus problem. The French President expressed his «great satisfaction» for the talks he held with President Clerides.

Regarding Cyprus - EU relations both Messrs Clerides and Chirac expressed satisfaction with the EU Helsinki summit decisions on Cyprus' EU course.

Moreover the French President reaffirmed that his country will spare no effort to promote the Republic's accession course.

President Clerides met earlier with the President of the French National Assembly and former Prime Minister Mr. Laurent Fabius and attended an official lunch hosted by the President of the Foreign Affairs Committee Mr. Jacques Lang.

[02] France staunchly supports Cyprus' EU course

French Minister for European Affairs Mr. Pierre Moscovici said yesterday that his country unreservedly supports the Republic's EU course.

The French Minister stated the above during a meeting he held with his Cypriot counterpart Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides. The two ministers expressed their mutual satisfaction for the progress achieved so far in the accession negotiations between Cyprus and the EU.

[03] Cyprus and Uzbekistan initial air transport agreement

Cyprus and Uzbekistan initialled yesterday the text of an agreement in the field of air transport, setting the framework for cooperation between the two countries in this area.

The agreement which will contribute in developing bilateral relations in the economic and tourist sectors was initialled by the Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Ministry of Communications and Works Dr. Vassos Pyrgos and the Director of Uzbekistan Airlines Commercial Department Mr. I. Salimov.
