In addition Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides informed the members on the outcome of the European Union Helsinki summit.

Speaking to reporters after the two-hour meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said the Council would convene again on 4 January so that party leaders can submit their views.

Cypriot antiquities, which for years have been kept in vaults, will go on show for the first time in April at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

The Museum announced that special Cyprus galleries would be inaugurated on 5 April 2000 in order to exhibit the famous Cescnola collection consisting of over 6000 Cypriot artefacts dating from 2500 BC to 300 AD,.

Luigi Palma di Cescnola acquired this collection during his term as American Consul in Cyprus, later selling it in 1874 to the Metropolitan Museum, of which he became the first Director.
