[01] UNFICYP mandate renewed
The UN Security Council yesterday unanimously approved resolution 1283
(1999) renewing the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus
(UNFICYP) for a further six month period to 15 June 2000.
Noting that the Cyprus government has agreed that in view of the prevailing
conditions in the island it is necessary to keep UNFICYP beyond 15 December
1999, the resolution reaffirms all its relevant resolutions on Cyprus, and
in particular resolution 1251.
It also welcomes the report of the UN Secretary-General in November calling
both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to address the humanitarian issue
of missing persons with due urgency and seriousness and requests him to
submit a report by 1 June 2000 on the implementation of this resolution.
