[02] Cyprus will accelerate EU harmonisation process
Cyprus and Russia signed yesterday a police cooperation agreement aiming at
upgrading preventing and combating crime.
The agreement was signed by Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Mr
Nicos Koshis and Russian Minister of Interior Mr Vladimir Borisovitch
Rushailo. Speaking after the ceremony Mr Nicos Koshis, who is on a three-
day official visit to the Russian capital said that the two countries
attach great importance to developing international cooperation for the
control of crime, the protection of public order and the respect of human
rights and freedoms.
"The agreement upgrades and strengthens even further the two countries'
cooperation in preventing, combating and investigating various crimes by
exchanging information, experts and training staff", he said.
Cyprus Finance Minister Mr Takis Klerides and Chief Negotiator in the
Republic's accession talks with the EU Mr George Vassiliou presided an
enlarged meeting at the Ministry of Finance to review progress achieved so
far in Cyprus'-EU harmonisation process.
Describing the meeting as very "useful and constructive", Mr Vassiliou said
that the government decided to adopt measures aimed at accelerating the
screening process on economy-related chapters.
