[01] UNESCO assures it will protect Cyprus' cultural heritage
Cyprus' Minister of Education and Culture, Ouranios Ioannides, had a
meeting on Friday in Paris with the Director of the Centre of World
Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, Mr Mounir Bouchnaki, and delivered special
petitions on the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage signed by various
political and cultural personalities.
He received assurances that UNESCO will act to protect the cultural
heritage of Cyprus in the occupied north of the island, which has been
neglected and looted following the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Addressing the UNESCO General Conference being held in the French capital,
Mr Ioannides also repeated the island's commitment to UNESCO and its
principles.
