Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-08-27Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 27 August 1999[01] P>The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announced the completion of the 9th excavation season at the late Bronze age site at Alassa. The excavation was conducted under the direction of Dr Sophocles Hadjisavvas, Director of the Department of Antiquities. The aim was to carry out further investigation of the large building east of Building II which probably functioned as the administrative centre of the large settlement of Alassa. Storage rooms and a wine press formed part of the administrative building which measures 25x16m. The exterior walls which were 1.10 m thick, have not survived and reconstruction was made possible by the substantial foundations cut in the rock which was itself levelled to form the floor of the building. The building was constructed on several levels as each series of rooms seems to have been built on a different level.
