[01] Education statistics
According to the latest figures on education published by the Department of
Statistics of Education, over ten thousand Cypriots were studying abroad in
the 1997/98 academic year.
Of these, 45,2 per cent were studying in Greece, 27,3 per cent in the UK,
17,8 per cent in the US and 9,7 in other countries.
Government expenditure on education at all levels, reached 217,5 million
Cyprus pounds which accounted for 13,8 per cent of the state budget and 5,0
per cent of the island's GDP.
There were 163,8 thousand full-time students or pupils at 1.208 educational
institutions of the island, with more than 80 per cent enrolled in public
institutions.
The total number of teaching staff reached 10.984.
