Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-06-14Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 14 June 1999CONTENTS[01] President Clerides returns from ChinaPresident Glafcos Clerides returned to Cyprus yesterday after a six-day state visit to China, saying that he was satisfied with his visit and that "practical steps" were taken to boost economic and trade links.The President also welcomed a joint statement on Cyprus by the Foreign Ministers of the G-8 group calling for comprehensive negotiations without preconditions and a settlement on the basis of UN resolutions. He said it included two positive elements, the support for a settlement on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions and a recommendation for negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot side without preconditions. President Clerides described his visit to China as "important" and said "we talked freely on various issues, including the Cyprus question." The Chinese political leadership, the President said, expressed "support for an independent, sovereign Cypriot state and supported the integrity and unity of Cyprus' territory as well as a solution that would result from the implementation of UN resolutions." Accompanying President Clerides to China were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and Commerce, Yiannakis Kasoulides, Takis Clerides and Nicos Rolandis. [02] UN Secretary-General is studying G-8 statementThe UN Secretary-General is studying the 10 June joint statement by the G-8 Foreign Ministers in preparation of the G-8 Summit meeting due to take place in Cologne.According to a statement by his Spokesman, the UN Secretary-General is aware of diplomatic efforts currently underway concerning his mission of good offices in Cyprus, which highlight the continuing interest of the international community in a solution to the Cyprus problem. "Since assuming his functions, the Secretary-General has spared no efforts to bring about a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. He remains in contact with all concerned and expects to be able to report to the Security Council on his good offices mission before the end of the month": [03] UNFICYP costs approvedThe plenary session of the UN General Assembly approved on 8 June the sum of $623.6 million to cover the costs of 12 peace-keeping operations.As regards UNFICYP, the UN General Assembly approved the allocation of $45.6 million to cover the costs of the force for the period 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2000. The government of Cyprus contributes financially to the maintenance of the Force by paying one third of the total cost of its maintenance, equivalent to $14,630.810. [04] Canada should play leading role in peace in CyprusThe Chairperson of the Canada-Cyprus Friendship Group, Mrs Karen Redman, speaking in the Canadian parliament on 10 June, called for Canada to play a leadership role in seeking peace in Cyprus.She expressed pleasure that the Cyprus will be on the agenda of the G-8 meeting and added that a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem is necessary for the security, political, economic and social well- being of all Cypriots. She said that it was important to recognise that this will be the 25th anniversary of the division of Cyprus and for all members of the Canadian House to be aware of the political problems that Cypriots face each and every day. [05] US states adopt resolutions on CyprusThe State Legislatures of California and Rhode Island adopted separate resolutions on Cyprus on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.The resolutions on 10 and 8 June respectively, refer to the illegal occupation of Cyprus territory and call on the US President and Congress to continue their efforts towards a solution based on the relevant UN resolutions.
