Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-06-07Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 7 June 1999CONTENTS[01] President Clerides begins official visit to ChinaThe President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides arrived yesterday in Bejing for a six day state visit expected to boost political, trade and economic bilateral relations.President Clerides is accompanied by Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Finance, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Messrs Ioannis Kassoulides, Takis Clerides, Nicos Rolandis, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis and other senior government officials. President Clerides will be received today by Chinese President Jian Zamin at an official ceremony today. The two Presidents will have private talks, which will be followed by official talks between delegations of the two countries. The talks are expected to focus on international problems, the situation in the Middle East, the Cyprus Problem and international relations. During his stay, the Cypriot President will also meet with Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rong Ji. The Ministers will hold talks with their counterparts on matters of mutual interest. In a message addressed to the people of China on the occasion of his state visit to the country, President Clerides referred to the close diplomatic, economic and cultural ties through the signing of a number of bilateral agreements .Cyprus and China established full diplomatic relations in September 1971, which developed in a close and fruitful co-operation between the two countries. Bilateral relations are expected to be boosted by the state visit, during which the Cypriot officials will speak at seminars or have meetings aimed at promoting Cyprus as a trade centre. [02] Accession negotiations with EU candidate countries gained momentum, says EUThe European Council held in Cologne between 3 and 4 June 1999, noted that the accession negotiations with EU candidate countries gained momentum and are on the right track.In the Presidency conclusions on the enlargement process, it is stated that the "European Council welcomes the positive results of the second round of substantive negotiations in the first half of 1999 with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia on a number of important and complex areas". Moreover the Council emphasises its resolve to maintain the momentum of negotiations. [03] Consumer Price Index rises in May 1999According to a report released last Friday by the Department of Statistics and Research, the Consumer Price Index for May 1999 increased by 0,19 per cent to 123,96 units compared to 123,73 units in the previous month. The rise is due to increases in the prices of certain fresh fruit, vegetables and meals taken out while a decrease was recorded in the prices of potatoes and household appliances.[04] Travellers'arrivals increase in AprilTravellers' arrivals marked an increase of 0,3 per cent in April 1999 compared to the corresponding month last year.According to a report, published by the Department of Statistics and Research, arrivals of travellers reached 615.829 for the period January- April 1999 recording an increase of 5,9 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.
