[01] Cyprus government decides to align itself with new EU measures against Yugoslavia

The Government decided to align itself as far as possible, with the new measures the European Union has decided to implement against Yugoslavia, Cyprus Government Spokesman Costas Serezis stated yesterday.

Speaking to the press yesterday after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, Mr Serezis explained that the government is studying the issues which fall within the competency of the Cabinet and will look into others which may require legislation before they are implemented.

The government, he said, will seek the opinion of the Attorney General, on those measures outside its competency.

Referring to the issue of countries conforming their policies to the EU oil embargo, US State Department Spokesman James Rubin, speaking during his regular briefing yesterday, welcomed Cyprus' decision to join the consensus of EU countries.

[02] Agricultural Statistics for 1997

The "Agricultural Statistics" report for the year 1997 has been published by the Department of Statistics and Research. The report provides detailed statistical data for stock and livestock production, areas cultivated, prices, intermediate inputs, exports of agricultural products, employment in agriculture and other data for the development of the broad agricultural sector.

According to the report the agricultural sector exhibited a significant decrease in its output in 1997 following the overall marginal decline rates in 1996. This was the result of the severe drought that prevailed in 1997 combined with very low temperatures observed during the period February- March 1997. The total gross output of the broad agricultural sector at current prices decreased by 3.1 percent to CP 335,0 million in 1997 compared to 345,7 million in 1996.

The subsectors of crop and forestry production recorded substantial decreases in 1997 of 23.0 percent and 12.0 percent respectively compared to 1996. The subsectors of livestock and fishing production expanded by 6.7 percent and 13.3 percent respectively. Employment in the agricultural sector fell to 27,144 persons in 1997 from 30,039 in 1996, recording a decrease of 9,6 percent.
