[01] Council of Europe's contribution to the restoration of human rights in Cyprus praised

The President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides stressed yesterday Cyprus' attachment and devotion to European values and its will to contribute to the building of a new Europe at the threshold of the 21st century.

Addressing a ceremony in Nicosia to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Council of Europe, President Clerides praised the significant contribution of the Council's institutions to the restoration and consolidation of human rights in Cyprus.

He referred to numerous resolutions adopted by the Council's Parliamentary Assembly that condemn "the continuous violation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people of Cyprus, as a result of the Turkish invasion and occupation".

Moreover President Clerides described as a "landmark" decision, the European Court of Human Rights recent judgement on the case of Loizidou against Turkey. The fact that the judgement holds Turkey responsible for the violations of Cypriot citizens' human rights in the occupied areas of Cyprus, sends the right political messages and should be taken into consideration in the search for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, he added.

[02] Government to apply new Industrial Policy Measures

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr. Nicos Rolandis said yesterday that the government intends to apply new Industrial Policy Measures in an effort to harmonise its legislation with the acquis communautaire and to reorganise its structure in order to speed up industrial development.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Rolandis added that the measures to be applied aim at providing assistance for the technical upgrading and development of traditional industry and at introducing advanced technology which will provide respective products.

Moreover Mr. Rolandis added that the measures will attract foreign investors and will create co-operation that will turn to account their technology and their know-how.

[03] Socialist Party Leader meets German Defence Minister in Bonn

The leader of Cyprus Socialist Party (EDEK) Dr. Vassos Lyssarides met last Tuesday in Bonn with Germany's Defence Minister and Vice President of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Mr. Rudolf Scharping.

During their meeting the Cyprus problem and Cyprus EU course were discussed. The two men also discussed issues of major concern for Europe, namely the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

Mr. Lyssarides also met yesterday with the President of the German Parliament Mr. Wolfgang Thierse with whom he discussed prospects of a solution to the Cyprus problem as well as the Republic's EU accession course.

Mr. Thierse stressed his country's firm support to Cyprus' accession, pointing out that Europe will not accept any intervention from third countries on the Cyprus issue.

[04] Cyprus and Syria sign road transports agreement

Cyprus and Syria signed a road transports agreement in Damascus yesterday. The agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of Cyprus Ministry of Communications and Works Dr. Vassos Pyrgos and his Syrian counterpart Mr. Ahmad Galil Aldin Fadloun.

The Cypriot delegation, accompanied by the Republic's Ambassador to Damascus Mr. Takis Ioannou, held private meetings with Syria's Ministers of Communications and Works.

During the meetings, the excellent and close bilateral relations of the two countries and the need to further enhance them were discussed.
