[01] Cyprus supports a peaceful resolution of the Kosovo crisis

President Clerides said yesterday that the Cyprus government supports a peaceful resolution of the Kosovo crisis. In a brief statement after receiving the salute at the Greek Independence Day Parade in Nicosia, President Clerides said that "Kosovo should remain within Yugoslav borders, with some form of autonomy for its administration".

He added that it is time the Security Council got more involved in the Kosovo issue.

Moreover Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides also called for a more active UN role.

In a written statement earlier, President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou stated that: "International law dictates that countries must not resort to the use of force and that any international action of this kind must first be supported with a relevant decision of the organs of the United Nations".

[02] President Clerides congratulates Greece on Independence Day

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides stressed yesterday that the 1821 Greek Revolution against Ottoman rule constitutes a source of inspiration in Cyprus' struggle for justice and freedom.

In congratulatory messages sent to Greece's President and Prime Minister Messrs Constantinos Stephanopoulos and Costas Simitis, on the occasion of Greek Independence Day, President Clerides said that Cyprus is inspired by the example set by the heroes of the Greek Revolution in its struggle for national survival, justice and freedom. President Clerides in his messages expressed his gratitude for Greece's unwavering support to the struggle of Cyprus.

[03] Chief negotiators of EU candidate countries hold talks in Cyprus

The Chief Negotiators of the five countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which will first join the EU together with Cyprus in the next enlargement, arrived in Larnaca yesterday.

During their two-day meeting in the coastal town of Limassol, the six negotiators will examine issues concerning accession negotiations and the EU.

Among the issues to be discussed are the protection of competition, free movement of goods and capital, harmonisation of the banking sector as well as the economic aspects of Agenda 2000.

They will give a press conference on Saturday 27 at the end of their deliberations.

[04] Imports increase in 1998

Total imports marked a slight increase in 1998 reaching L1.904,7 mn as compared with L1.899,3 mn in 1997.

According to a report released on Wednesday 24 by the Department of Statistics and Research the total exports decreased to L551,1 mn in relation to L640,0 mn in 1997.
