[01] Foreign Minister to hold US talks
Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides left for New York on Saturday February
13, to hold talks with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and US Secretary of
State Madeleine Albright.
Mr. Kasoulides will have a working breakfast with President Clinton's
special envoy on Cyprus Ambassador Richard Holbrooke on Tuesday 16
February. He will then meet with UN Secretary General Mr. Annan.
The Foreign Minister is expected to meet with his US counterpart on
Wednesday. Mr. Kasoulides is also scheduled to meet with members of the US
Senate and House of Representatives as will as with leaders of the Greek-
American community.
[02] Britain calls for a sustained effort on Cyprus
The British Prime Minister Tony Blair has reiterated that Britain wants "to
see a major, sustained effort by the international community towards a just,
comprehensive and lasting settlement in Cyprus".
In a letter of reply to Labour MP Tom Cox, dated February 3, the British
Prime Minister stressed that he "shares the frustration of Cypriot
communities everywhere that the tragic division of Cyprus continues despite
the many efforts displayed by the UN and the international community for
more than thirty years". Mr.Blair added that Britain "continues to believe
that the best means of achieving a solution is through the UN Secretary
General's mission of good offices".
