[01] Britain to continue its efforts for progress in the process for a Cyprus political settlement

Britain will not be deterred in its efforts to promote the UN peace process in Cyprus, despite last week's sharp exchange of letters between President Glafcos Clerides and the British High Commissioner in Nicosia Mr David Madden over the statements made by the British Envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay, last week.

"We regret what had happened. It was a step back and a missed opportunity for the promotion of the UN process,...but it will not dampen our enthusiasm to do what we can for further progress in that process", a spokesman for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office told CNA yesterday.

Last week the British Foreign Office had issued a statement expressing regret for the missed opportunity to hear the views of the two leaders and stressing that Sir David's comments were misunderstood.

"We regret President Clerides' decision not to attend the High Commissioner's dinner, but as David Madden's letter makes clear, it is based on a misunderstanding of what Sir David Hannay actually said. He made neither of the points to which President Clerides has objected".

[02] Kasoulides to meet with Madeleine Albright in February

The US Secretary of State Mrs Madeleine Albright is scheduled to meet with the Cyprus Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides on February 17, the US State Department Spokesman Mr James P. Rubin announced yesterday.

"The Secretary looks forward to consulting with her Cypriot counterpart on how to move the diplomatic process forward on Cyprus toward the goal of a balanced and lasting political settlement," the statement said, adding that "such a settlement should be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation that meets the legitimate interests of all sides."

[03] International Telecommunications Conference begins in Nicosia

A conference of the Working Group on Frequency Management of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), began in Nicosia yesterday.

The conference is attended by 104 representatives from 26 countries, the European Union, ten international organisations, representatives of the Ministry of Communications and Works, of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority and the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.

The conference will deal inter alia with frequency management for terrestrial and satellite communications, as well as with the harmonisation of frequency bands within Europe.

Other topics of discussion include the allocation of European Union frequencies for specialised services, mobile telephony, paging, and military/civil application.

[04] Registration of Motor Vehicles during 1998

The report "Registration of Motor Vehicles 1998 , which provides detailed data on the registration of motor vehicles by type and category of vehicle, has been issued by the Department of Statistics and Research.

According to the report the total registrations of motor vehicles newly registered during 1998 increased significantly by 21.8 per cent, from 31, 857 in 1997 to 38,798 in 1998.

In 1998 there were also increases of private saloon car registrations by 22.1 per cent, of goods conveyance vehicles by 18.1 per cent and mechanised cycles registrations by 27.3 per cent compared to 1997.
