[01] Cyprus reiterates its adherence to international law with regard to the destruction of weapons

The Cyprus government expressed today its opposition to the productions and use of weapons of mass destruction and stressed the need for compliance with the resolutions of the Security Council on that matter.

In a statement read to the press by Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides,it is noted that the government of Cyprus has established that according to the UN report ,Iraq has not complied with the Security Council Resolutions as regards the weapons of mass destruction.

Moreover Cyprus repeats its adherence to international law and the UN Charter.

[02] Cyprus' EU course cannot be held hostage to Turkey's designs

The Co-Chairman of the Cyprus-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee, Belgian Euro MP Philippe Monfils stressed yesterday in Strasbourg that Cyprus' EU application and its accession course are not conditional on developments in the Cyprus problem. Cyprus' accession to the EU, said Mr. Monfils, can by no means held hostage to Turkey's designs.

The Belgian MP, who was speaking during the 14th session of the Cyprus-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee, said in his intervention that the efforts of the Joint Parliamentary Committee focus on providing technical assistance to Cyprus in order to help the country harmonise its legislation with the acquis communautaire.

In her intervention, Austrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ms Ferrero Waldner referred to the official beginning of substantive accession negotiations with Cyprus on 10 November 1998, emphasising that the Austrian Presidency played an important role towards this aim.

Moreover Ms Waldner hailed the Cyprus government's proposal for the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the accession negotiations as well as Cyprus' decision to inform the Turkish Cypriot side on the evolution of accession negotiations, through the Internet and TV programmes.

The Austrian Minister reminded that the European Council's aspiration is the accession of a united Cyprus within the framework of a bicommunal, bizonal federation and added that all EU efforts are directed towards a political settlement on Cyprus.

However, no third country can veto Cyprus' accession, she concluded.
