[01] President Clerides briefs political party leaders

The President of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides briefed political party leaders and representatives yesterday on his recent talks in Athens with the Greek Prime Minister Mr Costas Simitis.

The talks in Athens between President Clerides and the Greek Premier had focused on the Cyprus problem and on defence matters with particular emphasis on the issue of the Russian anti-aircraft missiles, purchased by the Cyprus government.

The final decision on the deployment of the missiles will be taken in the next National Council meeting, which will take place in a few days.

[02] Next meeting of the six candidate countries for accession to the EU to be held in Cyprus

The Chief negotiators of the six candidate for accession countries, which started substantive negotiations with the European Union, will hold their next meeting in Cyprus in March 1999, after an invitation by Cyprus Chief negotiator Mr George Vassiliou.

This decision was taken during yesterday's meeting of the Chief negotiators of the six candidate countries which was held in Budapest.

During the meeting there was an exchange of views on a number of issues including the environment, labour and social policy. Issues such as the energy problem, the free movement of capital and the right to purchase land were also discussed under the initiative of the Cyprus Chief Negotiator, Mr George Vassiliou.

The Chief negotiators of the six countries decided to enhance their existing cooperation and organise meetings of experts for further examination of issues of common interest such as border control, energy and free movement of capital.
