[01] President Clerides: we will defend Cyprus' independence and territorial integrity

"We shall defend our freedom, our independence and our territorial integrity." This is the political message of the annual army manoeuvres code-named "Nikiforos '98", President Glafcos Clerides stated yesterday.

Speaking after taking the salute of the military parade, marking the end of the military exercises, President Clerides pointed out that the parade "was the culmination of an excellent exercise" which was the best he had seen in the past few years.

[02] Cyprus and Bulgaria sign financial co-operation protocol

Cyprus and Bulgaria have signed a protocol for financial, scientific and technical co-operation.

The Protocol is aimed at enhancing the existing bonds of friendship between Cyprus and Bulgaria and strengthening and further developing bilateral co- operation in the fields of trade, industry, investments, agriculture, tourism, telecommunications and technical assistance.

The Protocol was signed last Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau on behalf of Cyprus, and by the Bulgarian Deputy Minister for Trade and Tourism on behalf of Bulgaria.

[03] Demilitarisation of Cyprus will contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem

The Russian Duma has decided to adopt on 16 October one of its earlier statements in relation to "the situation in Cyprus", which stresses inter alia that an agreement on the demilitarisation of Cyprus will contribute to a quicker solution of the political problem.

In the statement the Duma reaffirms its support for President Clerides' demilitarisation proposal and expresses grave concern for the increase of tension in Cyprus and around the Eastern Mediterranean.

It welcomes the UN Secretary General's initiative aimed at a just and overall solution to the Cyprus problem, calls for the speedy resumption of intercommunal talks in the framework and on the basis of the United Nations resolutions, and stresses once again its support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.

Moreover, it states that all efforts aimed at legalising the illegal entity established by Turkish troops in the occupied part of Cyprus. is considered very dangerous.

Finally it calls upon the United Nations and all interested parties to take resolute action to reach an agreement on the demilitarisation of Cyprus, utilising at the same time the proposals made by Russia in April 1998 for the demilitarisation of Cyprus and the safety of its citizens.
